Whidbey Island was named for Joseph Whidbey who was George Vancouver's first
mate.

Deception pass was named that because George Vancouver thought it was a
peninsula. Whidbey discovered the waterway between what is now Sakgit Co.,
WA and Whidbey Island and Vancouver named the island after him.
